Live Oak Hosting
This screencast shows you how to set up hosting (and a new domain name) with Live Oak Hosting — and then how to publish your site to their server.
Transcript:
Hi, this is Dan from Karelia and today I'm going to walk through the process of signing up for an account and a domain name with Live Oak Hosting.
You might get to this link in a couple of different ways; one is within Sandvox. Go to the host setup assistant, click on that, choose your host. We'll later be publishing to this as a "Remote Host." Go ahead and click on the banner for "Live Oak Hosting."
Or you might have received an email from Karelia with some links. So go ahead and click on the link to "Live Oak Hosting" here. This open's up Live Oak's special web page just for Sandvox. We'll click on the link to "Order Online." Now in this case I want to register a new domain, although if I wanted to, and I had an existing domain, I could transfer it here. I am going to choose "tropical-parkas.com, " so let's go ahead and click next.
Now it's trying to see if we want some other related domains, let's go ahead and stay with this, just the dot com. And let's take a look at what packages we have available. We have several different options here. I'm just going to choose the basic hosting at the $10 a month level, $100 a year. Continue, and for now we're just going to bill one month at a time. You'll probably want to choose a whole year in advanced. And if you want you can choose additional mailboxes and "Asses Sale Certificate" if you are going to be doing any kind of e-commerce.
Now the coupon, that's the important thing, you'll want to enter "Sandvox." Then you'll enter your state, I'm in "California, " and the "United States." Here we have it, that's the pricing. It's charging $15 for the annual domain name registration, and then $10 for the first month and then it is giving me a 10% discount. There's the total. We will tell it that I'm a "New Customer, " click "Continue."
Alright, let's fill this out. I'm not actually going to show the information here, but this is where you would fill this out. The next step is the name servers. This is just information that tells Live Oak Hosting where your domain is actually hosted. Since we're hosting on Live Oak, as well as having to deal with the registration, we're just going to leave this information alone.
We'll scroll down here and then the next information is the contact information for the domain owner, and the billing information. We can fill that in.
The last bit of information we want is entering the user name. Let's do that now. The user information is only for you to see, it's your login to the system. I'm going to choose mine, type in my password twice, comments, how were we referred, let's just say "Other, " and then we'll enter our credit card information. I'm going to open this up in another tab and we'll read that carefully. Then back here on this page we'll go ahead and choose "Yes." And we will verify the order.
The next page shows you everything you've entered and asks you to verify that this is what you want. When you're ready you'll press "Process My Order." Here's our confirmation, it says "Your order has been processed." Now we're going to wait for an email to come in and we'll continue from there.
I got a few emails from Live Oak Hosting and the one that I really want us to use here is the "Welcome" email. This has all the account information that we're going to need. The nice thing about Live Oak is that since they're familiar with Sandvox, and they recognize me as a new Sandvox customer. Here's the information that I'm going to need to put into Sandvox.
Now I'm back in Sandvox. I am ready to enter this information in and then we'll go ahead and publish. So I click "Setup Host, " "New Configuration, " choosing "On a Remote Host, " "SFTP" or "FTP." I'll just enter the information that they give in the email under "Sandvox."
They say to use FTP but I would really suggest that we use SFTP, it's much more secure. Enter the user name and password. We won't be entering anything into the subfolder. And it passed the test. So now we're ready to go ahead and publish. Click on "Done, " choose "Publish" from the toolbar and if your domain name is ready then you should be able to see the results very quickly. When this is done I will go ahead and select "Visit Published Site" and there it is. It's published.
